Ninja Foodi carnitas give you juicy, crispy-edged Mexican pulled pork in about an hour, all in one pot. You pressure cook the pork until it is fork-tender, then air crisp it for those irresistible golden, crunchy bits.

Quick navigation
The Ninja Foodi is perfect for this because it does both jobs- tender braising and crisping, without dirtying a second pan. This step-by-step Ninja Foodi carnitas recipe shows you how to get restaurant-style pork with bright citrus and warm spices at home.
Pork shoulder is the cut to use here; it turns meltingly tender under pressure. If you love a good Mexican night, my Ninja Foodi carne asada or Carne asada soup are another family favorites worth bookmarking.
Why make carnitas in the Ninja Foodi
Traditional carnitas simmer for hours in lard, which tastes amazing but takes a serious time commitment. The Ninja Foodi gets you there in a fraction of the time- the pressure cooker tenderizes the pork fast, and the air crisp lid gives you those crispy edges without deep frying.
It is also a one-pot wonder, which I love on a busy night. Everything happens in the same insert, so cleanup is quick, and you end up with a big batch of pork that stretches across tacos, bowls, and leftovers all week.

How to get crispy carnitas
The secret to great carnitas is the contrast- tender, juicy meat with crispy, caramelized edges. Pressure cooking gets you the tender part, but do not stop there.
After the pork is shredded, spread it out and spoon a little of the cooking liquid over the top. Then use the Air Crisp function to blast it at high heat until the edges turn golden and crunchy. That step is what takes it from plain pulled pork to real carnitas, so do not skip it.

Ways to serve carnitas
A batch of carnitas is a build-your-own-dinner dream.
- Pile it into warm corn tortillas with onion, cilantro, and lime for classic tacos
- Build burrito bowls over rice with beans, salsa and guacamole
- Stuff it into quesadillas or burritos with plenty of cheese
- Top nachos or loaded fries with the crispy bits
- Spoon it over eggs for a hearty breakfast hash
- Serve short on time? Trader Joe's carnitas is a decent shortcut, but homemade wins on flavor
- Add pickled onions and a squeeze of lime for brightness
Tips for the best carnitas
Use pork shoulder. Also called pork butt, this well-marbled cut stays juicy and shreds beautifully. Leaner cuts dry out.
Cut it into chunks. Two-inch pieces cook more evenly and quickly under pressure than one big roast.
Don't skip the citrus. Orange and lime juice brighten the rich pork and are classic carnitas flavor. Toss the squeezed halves in the pot too.
Crisp in batches if needed. Spread the pork in a single layer for the crispiest edges. For more easy dinners, browse my air fryer recipes.

Ninja Foodi pulled pork FAQs
How long does it take to make carnitas in the Ninja Foodi?
About an hour total- roughly 25 minutes at high pressure plus a natural release, then 8 to 10 minutes to air crisp. Pork shoulder chunks come out fork-tender.
What cut of pork is best for carnitas?
Pork shoulder (pork butt) is the classic choice. Its marbling keeps the meat juicy and makes it easy to shred.
Do I have to crisp the pork?
You can eat it right after pressure cooking, but the air crisp step gives you the signature crispy, caramelized edges that make carnitas special.
Can I make carnitas ahead of time?
Yes. Pressure cook and shred the pork ahead, then crisp it just before serving so the edges are fresh and crunchy.
What liquid should I use?
A mix of chicken broth with orange and lime juice works great. You need enough liquid for the Ninja Foodi to come to pressure.

Storing & reheating
Store carnitas in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Freeze Cooled carnitas freeze well for up to 3 months. Freeze with a little cooking liquid to keep the meat moist.
Reheat Warm in the Ninja Foodi on Air Crisp for a few minutes to re-crisp the edges, or in a skillet over medium heat.
