Fun and delicious desserts that are kid-friendly and filled with healthy ingredients can sometimes be hard to find. Homemade dole whip is always a tasty treat to serve but many recipes include ice cream, and if you are looking for a healthier option you may not want the added sugar.
Instead of ice cream, I used milk to provide the perfect creamy consistency while still keeping this recipe light and refreshing.
Refined sugar-free and vegan-friendly, this creamy pineapple soft serve is actually a healthier version of Disney's dole whip which is made from a powdered mix.
In this healthy Ninja Creami recipe, real whole ingredients are used so you can feel good about serving it to your family for dessert or as a refreshing snack. Plus, it's so quick and easy to put together that your kids can help you make it. The hardest part about this recipe is waiting for it to freeze!
Recipe ingredients
Pineapple chunks or tidbits. Use fresh pineapple chunks or those packed in juice instead of syrup to avoid added sugar.
Pineapple juice. To give more sweetness and pineapple flavor.
Milk. Used to get the perfect creamy consistency.
How to make Ninja Creami dole whip
In this recipe i used canned Dole pineapple chunks in pineapple juice. You can always use just chopped fresh pineapple and fresh pineapple juice if you want. I went an easy route.
If using canned pineapple, blending is not needed, but recommended for smoother texture. I added pineapple chunks, pineapple juice and milk in to my blender and gave it a spin.
Once the mixture is nice and smooth, pour it into the Ninja Creami plastic pint. Place container in the freezer on a leveled surface. Freeze for 24 hours.
Next day, pull it out and insert container in to the Ninja Creami. Set machine on Sorbet mode. If the mixture is crumbly, add a splash of milk and re-spin. It will help and make the dole whip very creamy!
Substitutions
Pineapple chunks. Use fresh or canned pineapple. Don't substitute with crushed pineapple because the extra juices can cause your dole whip to be too soft.
Would you like to save this?
Juice. Use regular pineapple juice or the juice from canned pineapple chunks. Alternatively, you could use orange or mango juice for a different flavor.
Milk. You can use the milk of your choice. If looking for a non-dairy version simply use your favorite plant-based milk. In fact, you don't even need to add milk in this recipe. It will make dole whip more creamy though.
Variations
Use coconut milk to give a refreshing tropical taste to this pineapple soft serve.
Switch up your fruits. Use strawberries, bananas, mangos, raspberries, lime juice, or orange juice to create different flavors.
If you don't have a Ninja Creami ice cream maker, use a food processor or blender. Freeze your pineapple chunks until completely frozen. Blend until the fruit looks crumbly then slowly add the rest of the ingredients until it reaches your desired consistency.
Frequently asked questions
Dole whip is a non-dairy frozen dessert made of pineapple chunks, pineapple juice, and non-dairy milk. Sometimes lemon or lime juice, vanilla ice cream, and sugar are added as well.
Homemade dole whip can be made vegan depending on the ingredients used. This recipe includes milk, but you can use non-dairy milk if you are vegan.
Dole whip tastes like soft-serve ice cream but this dessert is usually dairy free and is made from blended frozen fruits and non-dairy milk, instead of dairy, eggs, and refined sugar.
I would say that dole whip is closer to a sherbet or soft serve ice cream because it often contains some sort of milk or dairy. Sorbets are made mostly of fruit, sugar, and sometimes a little bit of water.
Frozen fruits should not be used in the Ninja Creami because the fruit pieces get very hard and it could damage the machine or blades. I would suggest letting the fruit thaw before using it.
Yes! If you don't have a Ninja Creami Ice Cream maker using a food processor or blender would work just fine. Just keep in mind that it may not be as thick and creamy as the Ninja Creami version.
Ninja Creami dole whip storage
You can double the recipe and pour the mixture in to two pint size containers. Use one in 24 hours and keep another one for later use.
If you have any dole whip leftovers after you used the Ninja Creami, just smooth the whip on top as much as possible, place the lid on the jar and place it in the freezer.
Before enjoying it again, just let sit on the counter for 3-5 minutes to thaw for a bit. You can re-spin it if you feel like it needs it.
