Recipe ingredients
Half and Half. For the most rich, creamy and delicious homemade ice cream. You can use heavy whipping cream for an even richer flavor and texture. While you technically can use "regular" milk, for the best taste and creaminess I do not suggest subbing with lighter whole or 2% milk.
Blueberries. Use fresh berries that have been washed with cold water and dried. You do not want any excess moisture to make its ways into the blender. Looking for more recipes with blueberries? Try this blueberry banana oatmeal muffins.
Honey. Adds just the right amount of sweetness without overpowering the fresh blueberry flavor. Easily adjust to your liking to make the ice cream more or less sweet.
Lemon. Fresh lemon zest adds a bright, lightly tart citrus flavor that brings together the sweet honey and berries.
How to make Ninja Creami blueberry ice cream
Wash your blueberries first. Berries can get very dirty so i really recommend rinsing them well with running water. Dry with paper towels and add to you blender. Add half and half and honey.
Would you like to save this?
Grab a lemon and zest some of it right into the blender. Lemon zest will add some tartness to the ice cream. I love a touch of citrus flavor in my ice cream!
Now blend until smooth. Pour the mixture in to the plastic Ninja Creami container and place in the freezer. It should take up to 24 hours or slightly less for it to freeze completely.
So the next day, insert the plastic container in to the machine. Press on the ICE CREAM button and let it work the magic. Usually after the first spin you will need to re-spin since the mixture comes out crumbly. Add a tiny splash of milk or cream and re-spin once or twice if needed.
Frequently asked questions
Crumbly ice cream is usually a sign that the freezer is too cold. The intense cold and moisture can cause ice crystals to form, causing what is known as freezer burn. Have you noticed other foods getting super icy as well? I suggest using a freezer-safe thermometer to check the temperature of your freezer and adjust as needed.
If your Ninja Creami blueberry ice cream does get a bit crumbly, don't worry! Remove from the freezer and soften the container of ice cream for several minutes on the counter. Give it a stir before serving to get it smooth again.
It's recommend that you do not use frozen fruit in a Ninja Creami... The machine works best when it is able to spin together easily blend-able ingredients, and frozen berries can disrupt the process.
If you'd like to use frozen blueberries you can puree them in a food processor first. Add them once they are no longer frozen and chunky.
The taste and creamy texture of freshly made blueberry ice cream simply can't be beat! However, should you have leftovers than yes, you can technically refreeze the ice cream. Keep it stored in an airtight container in the freezer and use within 1 week.
It really is essential to freeze the ice cream base for a full 24 hours before spinning in the Ninja Creami. Otherwise you won't get that signature smooth and even texture.
If the ice cream doesn't have quite the smoothness you want, try using the respin function and adding a splash of heavy cream.
Want an even creamier, rich and slightly tangy ice cream? Consider adding softened cream cheese to the ice cream base before spinning. It's delicious with the sweet blueberries and lemon!
What to do with leftovers
You can double the recipe and pour the mixture in to two pint size containers. Use one in 24 hours and keep another one for later use. If you have any Ninja Creami blueberry ice cream leftovers, just smooth the ice cream on top as much as possible, place the lid on the jar and place it in the freezer.
