This Ninja Foodi beef tongue recipe includes only a handful of simple ingredients to cook flavorful and tender tongue without fail! You'll love how easy it is to use a pressure cooker to make delicious cow tongue that tastes like it has been slow cooking all day, but is ready in a fraction of the time.

Ninja Foodi appliances are renowned for their convenience and ability to quickly and easily make even the most lean and dense pieces of meat fork-tender. Case in point: My Ninja Foodi beef tongue recipe cooks fairly tough tongue to soft, juicy, and - of course - tender perfection, every time. And with barely any effort!

Pressure cooked tongue has the same melt-in-your-mouth texture and fabulous flavor you typically get from slow cooking in a crockpot for several hours. But this efficient version takes under 2 hours to make, including pressure building and natural pressure release time!

There is no need to sear or precook the meat on the stovetop first, and the cooking process is totally hands-off once everything is loaded into the Ninja Foodi pot.

Once done, there are nearly an infinite number of great ways to serve and uses for cooked cow tongue! Slice or shred the meat and serve with your favorite comfort food side dishes. Or include it in all sorts of recipes to make beef tongue tacos (tacos de lengua), sandwiches, wraps, and more!

    Recipe ingredients

Beef tongue. An average cow tongue weighs about 1-1.5 pounds. Thaw in the fridge overnight if frozen. Then clean before cooking by scrubbing it under cold water and removing any extra bits of fat found underneath the tongue.

Salt and pepper. These are staple spices for nearly any savory recipe. We keep it simple in this recipe.

Bay leaves. Earthy and aromatic, dried bay leaves add a "cozy" taste to the dish. But they are just for flavoring and should not be eaten. Discard them from the pot before serving.

Water. Just enough water to cover the beef tongue is essential so it does not burn.

Onion. The sharp flavor of white onion balances the richness of the tongue.

    Where to buy

Beef tongue is usually available fresh or frozen at most grocery store chains. Check the meat section, or ask the store butcher about availability.

You can also purchase nearly any cut of beef from reputable online retailers that ship frozen cow tongues directly to your door.

    Frequently asked questions

What temperature is beef tongue done?

Cow tongue is most tender when it is properly cooked to an internal temperature of 160-165 degrees. Unlike steak or other cuts of beef that are best enjoyed medium-rare, the tongue should be more medium to medium-well done. Using a meat thermometer is the best way to check for doneness.

Is beef tongue chewy or tender?

Properly pressure cooked tongue is the best of both worlds! Ninja Foodi beef tongue is fork-tender and cuts easily, but also has a nice bit of chew. It should be similar to a lean, medium-well cooked steak.

Why is my beef tongue tough?

Tough tongue is usually the result of undercooking or overcooking. The pressure cooker is great for avoiding either catastrophe! Follow my step-by-step Ninja Foodi recipe for cooking beef tongue and you're sure to have perfectly tender meat every time. Pro tip: You might be tempted to do a quick pressure release when the hour is up, but don't do it! The extra several minutes of a natural pressure release is important to get the softest meat.

What does beef tongue taste like?

It is very rich and beefy, but with a more mild flavor compared to most other organ meats. For comparison, it does not have the same iron-y, gamey taste as liver or kidneys.

Can you put beef tongue straight into a pressure cooker?

Yes, you sure can! The cow tongue is placed in the Ninja Foodi raw along with all of the other ingredients. You don't have to pre-cook the meat or do any other prep work!
